PUWER stands for (Acronym) the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER regulations). This online course explains these regulations and also covers what is required to protect users of work equipment and simple machine safety advice.
Precautions are easily taken with work equipment that will significantly reduce the risk of injury or illness to the user or others. The course considers the risk associated with using work equipment and what work equipment is covered by PUWER .
This online course would fall into the category of a General Health and Safety Training course that Safety trainers would find useful to train relevant staff and employee who are provided or use Equipment during the course of their employment. The course meets the training and awareness requirements of relevant legislation and regulations including Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. It also meets the requirements of CHAS, SafeContractor, Construction line, Exor and other SSIP registrations plus HSE safety training requirements.
The course is suitable for anyone who uses equipment at work including office equipment such as computers and photocopiers as well as non-powered and powered equipment such as hand tools, drills and large machinery.
This online course will provide delegates with an understanding of the main risks associated with using work equipment and ways to minimise and control the risks. The course also provides details of the various health and safety laws and regulations that impose a duty on both employees and employers to manage the risks associated with different types of work equipment.
After completing the course, candidates will:
Be aware of the dangers associated with using work equipment, including powered and non-powered handheld equipment as well as larger, static equipment and machinery such as lifting equipment;
Candidates will understand the requirements of PUWER, how personal protective equipment is essential but a last resort.
Have knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework that underpins the supply and use of work equipment, PUWER regs;
Be aware of the precautions to take when using and choosing work equipment;
Have knowledge of the recommended risk controls required to safely use common work equipment items. Such as Emergency Stop buttons - safe use of.
The course comprises 5 interactive modules and a final assessment. Links to recommended reading and additional resources may be provided within the training modules. These links are not mandatory and will not be tested for in the final assessment.
Duration
It takes approximately 40 minutes to complete the course in full. This can be spread out over multiple sessions or completed in a single session. There is no time limit for completion.
Assessment
All candidates must complete a multiple choice assessment after working through the training material. The candidate will be asked 16 multiple choice questions, randomly chosen from a larger question pool, and need to answer a minimum of 12 correctly to pass. Candidates will be given instant feedback after completing the assessment stating whether they have passed or failed. The assessment can be re-taken as many times as is required to pass at no additional cost.
Successful candidates will receive a IIRSM Certificate and 0.5 CPD Credits.
The PUWER training awareness certificate has no expiry date because there is no formally recognised period of validity for any health and safety training. The HSE recommends refresher training is carried out whenever it is felt necessary. Safety registration bodies such as CHAS, SafeContractor, ConstructionLine & SMAS and other members of the SSiP scheme recommend most re-training is done every 3 years.
