Safeguarding Adults Course - Target Audience

Everyone has the right to live in safety, free from abuse or neglect. However, some people have care and support needs, and are unable to protect themselves from the risk of abuse as a result.

It is essential that anyone who works with children and adults at risk understands what abuse is, and how to identify and report it, in order to safeguard and protect the needs of adults in their care.

This level 1 course covers safeguarding vulnerable adults (SOVA), and provides learners with information to help them understand, recognise and report when an adult is being subjected to abuse or neglect.

What is Level 1 Safeguarding Adults Training?

Level one safeguarding training is an introduction to safeguarding. You do not need prior knowledge to take or complete this course.

Level one safeguarding training for adults will educate you in what safeguarding is and why it is so important, as well as the various types of abuse and neglect and how to recognise when they occur. It covers the basic knowledge required for anyone working with vulnerable adults, including the six principles of safeguarding adults. It will also address how to respond to a disclosure, report concerns, and keep records.

Roles That Need Level 1 Safeguarding Training

Level one training is appropriate for workers at all levels, including managers, supervisors, full-time and part-time employees, and volunteers.

It is suitable for anyone who works with, or is responsible for, adults with care and support needs. This includes medical staff, care home workers, and teachers.

Other roles include:

  • Social workers, council employees, and immigration officers.
  • Church officials, religious leaders, and volunteers.
  • NHS employees include GPs, nurses, and healthcare assistants.
  • Private healthcare workers.
  • Health and social care professionals include paramedics and health visitors.

For those that work with children and young people, or those who work around (but not directly with) vulnerable groups, our Safeguarding Children and Safeguarding for Workers courses may be more appropriate.

Safeguarding Adults Training - Course Overview

This course is designed to give learners an understanding of adult safeguarding, and how to protect any vulnerable adults that they care for. It also aims to answer questions such as:

  • What is definition of safeguarding adults?
  • What is the aim of safeguarding adults?
  • How many principles underpin all adult safeguarding work?
  • Which acts inform current safeguarding adults policies and procedures?

At the end of the course, learners will understand:

  • The safeguarding adults legislation that applies in the UK, such as the Care Act 2014 and Mental Capacity Act 2005.
  • What mental capacity is and how it affects safeguarding.
  • The main forms of abuse and how to identify them.
  • How individuals and organisations can prevent abuse from occurring.
  • What to do when you suspect or have evidence that abuse is taking place.

How often does safeguarding training need to be updated in the UK?

We recommend taking safeguarding adults training at least once every three years to ensure you are up-to-date with best practice. Regular training you them recognise signs of abuse, respond appropriately, and protect vulnerable adults effectively in various settings.
