Manual Handling Injuries are one of the most common causes of injury at work. Accounting for nearly one third of all reported accidents.
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 were introduced to help minimise the risk from manual handling operations. A requirement of these regulations is that employees are suitably informed and capable of performing manual handling operations.
This is a general awareness course, sometimes referred to as just Manual Handling and other times as Moving and Handling whichever title is given it is designed to satisfy the training and awareness requirements of relevant legislation and regulations including L23 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. It also meets the requirements of CHAS, SafeContractor, ConstructionLine, Exor and other SSIP registrations plus HSE safety training requirements.
This course is ideal for office workers, warehouse staff, delivery drivers, construction site and factory assembly workers indeed anybody involved in any sort of manual handling operation. Once a basic manual handling safety awareness is achieved it may need supplementing with site specific or task orientated face to face skill training.
Moving and Handling people is a specific skill, this course would be a good starting point but would need some further training specific to that task. For example the Wales passport scheme as adopted by many NHS trusts, specifically for moving and handling people.

The Manual handling awareness certificate has no expiry date because there is no formally recognised period of validity for any health and safety training. The HSE recommends refresher training is carried out whenever it is felt necessary. Safety registration bodies such as CHAS, SafeContractor, ConstructionLine & SMAS and other members of the SSiP scheme recommend most re-training is done every 3 years.
All of our courses, systems and services have been registered to the internationally recognised ISO 9001:2015 quality standard. Quality Management Systems Ltd (QMS) made this prestigious award to Commodious in January 2018. This gives assurance that the training and assessment was completed with a quality registered organisation.
This e-learning course only provides awareness education. Face to face training may be needed in addition in order to complete the all round skills and knowledge to be able to carry this forward practically in some organisations.
This online manual handling/moving and handling awareness course will help organisations meet their legal obligations and provide candidates with a thorough awareness of the dangers associated with manual handling operations and the management and control measures required to control the risks.
After completing the course, candidates will:
Understand the risks and health effects associated with manual handling operations;
Have knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework that underpins manual handling operations;
Be aware of the methods required to assess the risk from manual handling operations;
Have knowledge of safe manual handling techniques.
The course comprises 2 interactive modules and a final assessment. Links to recommended reading and additional resources may be provided within the training modules. These links are not mandatory and will not be tested for in the final assessment.
It takes approximately 55 minutes to complete the course in full. This can be spread out over multiple sessions or completed in a single session. There is no time limit for completion.
All candidates must complete a multiple choice assessment after working through the training material. The candidate will be asked 12 multiple choice questions, randomly chosen from a larger question pool, and need to answer a minimum of 9 correctly to pass. Candidates will be given instant feedback after completing the assessment stating whether they have passed or failed. The assessment can be re-taken as many times as is required to pass at no additional cost.
