Commodious are an IATP member, and we deliver an online asbestos training course that has been audited by the IATP. Recently, the IATP have received questions regarding the validity of asbestos training provided by its members, and the authorisation by which they operate.
In this article, we have answered some of these questions in order to help organisations to better understand the role and position of the IATP.
The IATP, or Independent Asbestos Training Providers, is an organisation of members who have been approved by the IATP to deliver audited asbestos training. It is one of several membership organisations for asbestos training providers that is 'recognised' by the HSE.
It is important to note that the HSE does not endorse or approve any specific training providers, nor do they promote any one provider or membership organisation over any other. They also do not require a person to receive their asbestos training from a specific organisation.
Instead, the HSE requires that any asbestos training is delivered by a competent person and complies with current legislation and guidance, including the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and the L143 Approved Code of Practice.
The IATP has several purposes and aims. Its main purpose is to ensure that its members are competent to deliver asbestos training, and that this training is fully compliant with current and relevant legislation, regulations, Approved Codes of Practice, and guidance.
They also work with several national and international organisations to raise awareness of the risks associated with asbestos exposure, and highlight the importance of suitable asbestos training.
There are four IATP membership levels that training providers can attain:
The specific membership level that a provider attains will be dependent on the kind of training they provide. There are also two membership levels for those that do not provide asbestos training:
Choosing to receive asbestos training from an IATP member removes the need for an individual or business to prove that it is delivered by a competent person and is compliant with the HSE's requirements, as this process will already have been completed by the IATP prior to the membership being granted.
Yes, Commodious is an IATP member. This means that we have been through the IATP's robust audit, assessment and verification processes, which confirmed that our Asbestos Awareness course is compliant with the requirements of the relevant Approved Code of Practice (L143), and that we have the competence required to deliver this training. If you have any further questions about our IATP membership, feel free to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
