Every year people are killed or seriously injured whilst working in confined spaces. High risk confined spaces have obvious dangers, but working in medium risk confined spaces has many less obvious hazards.
A basement room, with good access but poor ventilation, is a low risk confined space that can soon become high risk with a buildup of toxic fumes. Injuries occur to both the workers in the confined space and those attempting a rescue.
The course is designed to satisfy the training and awareness requirements of relevant legislation and regulations including the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. It also meets the requirements of CHAS, SafeContractor, Construction line, Exor and other SSIP registrations plus HSE safety training requirements.
This online course is a general awareness course suitable for anybody who has to access a confined space. The course can also be used by people working in high risk confined space environments as a general introduction alongside suitable supplementary, hazards specific training.
This online course will help organisations meet their legal obligations and provide candidates with a thorough awareness of the dangers associated with working in confined spaces and the management and control measures required to control the risks.
After completing the course, candidates will:
The course comprises 1 interactive module and a final assessment. Links to recommended reading and additional resources may be provided within the training modules. These links are not mandatory and will not be tested for in the final assessment.
It takes approximately 40 minutes to complete the course in full. This can be spread out over multiple sessions or completed in a single session. There is no time limit for completion.
All candidates must complete a multiple choice assessment after working through the training material. The candidate will be asked 12 multiple choice questions, randomly chosen from a larger question pool, and need to answer a minimum of 9 correctly to pass. Candidates will be given instant feedback after completing the assessment stating whether they have passed or failed. The assessment can be re-taken as many times as is required to pass at no additional cost.

Successful candidates will receive a IIRSM Certificate and 1 CPD Credit.
This online course only provides safety awareness education. Additional skills training may be required to use this knowledge practically in your organisation. The certificate has no expiry date because there is no formally recognised period of validity for any health and safety training. The HSE recommends refresher training is carried out whenever it is felt necessary. Safety registration bodies such as CHAS, SafeContractor, ConstructionLine & SMAS and other members of the SSiP scheme recommend most re-training is done every 3 years.
